ST. LOUIS, Mo.— National Girls & Women in Sports Day started yesterday but over the next week we'll be highlighting the success over our women's sports teams and individuals over the past year. Next up, is Fontbonne women's wrestler Kai Poux.
Poux, a Brooklyn, N.Y., native, shined in her first season on the mat for the Griffins highlighted by becoming the first women's wrestler in program history to qualify for NCWWC Nationals back in February.
At the NCWWC Regional Qualifier, Poux opened with a technical fall victory over Kaycee Fitero from Lindenwood. After dropping her next match by pin, Poux moved to the consolation bracket and won by decision over Melena Jones from Lindenwood.
In her third place match, Poux squared off against Isabeau Shalack (Colorado Mesa) and Shalack won by fall. However, Poux went on to claim fourth place to qualify for Nationals.
Poux, who was the No. 15 seed at Nationals, faced No. 2 seed Tavi Heidelberg-Tollson from King University and Tollson won by fall at 3:45. Then, she faced Amara Devericks from Gannon and Devericks won by fall.
This year, Poux earned her first win on the season at the Lindenwood Open back on November 21st and followed that up with a win over Sierra Hall from Lindenwood University.
Poux will be looking to punch her ticket to her second straight NCWWC Nationals appearance on February 20th at the qualifier.
