Fontbonne gets important three-game sweep at Eureka
The Fontbonne University baseball team swept a critical three-game series with Eureka College this weekend improving their overall record to 11-16 while boosting their St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) record to 7-4.
In the first game, the Griffins got a pitching gem from Jacob Becker who threw a complete game, five-hit shutout to lead Fontbonne to a 3-0 win. Becker walked nobody while striking out five. Senior Sean Fisher and junior Rob Berger stayed out to spark the offense for the Griffins. Fisher went 2-3 with a RBI while Berger was 2-4 with a RBI and a run scored.
In the second game, Fontbonne fell behind early but rallied with a six-run fourth inning to cruise to a 10-3 win. The Griffins were led by freshman Jesse Schott who went 3-6 from the plate with a double, home run, three RBI's and a run scored. Senior Andrew Schlereth picked up the win on the mound for the Griffins throwing seven innings allowing two runs while striking out 10.
In the series finale, Schlereth went from dominating on the mound to packing a punch with the bat. Schlereth went 4-5 from the plate with two home runs, four RBI's and five runs scored as the Griffins pounded Eureka 22-10. Fisher went 4-5 with three RBI's while Schott and sophomore Matt Willis also drove in three RBI's apiece. Junior Dustin Graves picked up the win in relief for the Griffins.
Fontbonne returns to the diamond Wednesday playing at Westminster College at 6 pm.
